Disciplining and Earning

Forgive the title I know it is not attractive at all. And I know for a fact that discipline is one touchy subject. However, let us time travel when we were still in our elementary years. Remember when we talk in class, our class president would write our names in the board and we are required to pay 1.00 for them to erase our names on the board. Worst, if we would not speak English, there would be a fine as well. If you curse inside the classroom, there’s also a fine (trust me I didn’t do this). Not to mention, if you are also late. You also get to help clean the school and hand over 1.00 or 2.00. Our adviser would then collect the money and the amount would be used during our Christmas party.

Hence, the cost of the party would be lessened because of this pool of funds. This is good especially if you rarely commit mistakes. And bad for those who are stockholders of fines and punishments.

We all know for a fact that these were reasonable during that time. Our teachers would surely want to impose discipline in the classroom and for us to be fluent with the English language. Well, I have my moments where I would talk. I even got angry to our class president for listing my name five times in one day. That is 5.00 way back in the 90s and my oh my, that’s pretty huge. I can still remember not eating snacks because my money was used to pay for it.

Now that we’ve grown up perhaps we can still be able to do this minus the writing on the board. Perhaps we can still be able to impose rules and discipline within our current environment and at the same time earn from it.

Here are a few examples.

New Girls’ Douchebag Jar

I am a fan of the series New Girl! Zooey is one fine lady plus the plot and their douchebag jar. So what’s this douchebag jar?

According to New Girl Wikia, “the Douchebag Jar is a running gag on New Girl. The purpose of the jar, which sits in the loft living room, is to help correct Schmidt's behavior much like a more common "Swear Jar" - he is to put money in the jar for anything he says or does that is considered douchebaggery. Infractions are typically worth one dollar, but have been worth up to $50, at the discretion of his roommates. The jar, however, is mostly ineffective, as Schmidt takes pride in everything he does that warrants an infraction, and rarely argues when he's told to put money in.”

Hence, every time someone swears or becomes a douchebag, they would need to put a dollar or more depending on the act in the jar. This is a good practice especially if you are living with your friends in a loft or in a dormitory. The fund that you will accumulate can then be used for your parties or perhaps to fund a travel vacation together or just about whatever.

Resist Temptation Jar

Do you want to buy something? Have you been itching to get yourself something new but you know you want to save? Been there, done that!

So perhaps a resist temptation jar would be a good idea. Here, instead of spending the money to buy the item, you would just put the item in the jar or your preferred bank account. No money on your end hence you will be able to redirect your funds in your savings area.

Create Your Own Discipline Jar

Devise your own discipline jar today! You can do it with friends and family members. Make sure that the amount is fairly reasonable and cheap. But not 1.00 ok? Just make sure to ask consent from your officemates and your family members before imposing this. And you need to be transparent as to where the money would go. Suggest that it will be used to fund a future travel with the group or the family or perhaps to fund your Christmas party or Noche Buena.

You can setup a discipline jar in the office for those who are always late. Make them pay even 10.00 for it or whatever cost that would be deemed reasonable. Not only are you imposing punctuality in the office but you are also making them responsible for their lateness.

For your family, perhaps you can impose a fine to a family member who would not do chores. Make them pay should they want to steer clear of the responsibility. Whether they would do it or pay. Take it or leave it.

There are still many possible ways where you can enforce order in your family and work environment. You can also earn in the process. This is a win-win situation as you will not only be disciplining an individual, you can also collect a substantial amount for everyone.
